Check out Robert Guillaume in his history making performance ever as the first African American actor ever to play the title role in The Phantom of the Opera. This was in the early 90’s during the show’s sit down LA production. He opened the doors later on for Norm Lewis (who made history as the first African American actor in the Broadway cast) and Derrick Davis (in the current US National Tour).
