We are just 1 HOUR away from the live event of 2018…. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert. To keep us hyped, we have another throwback to some of the most successful productions.
Back in 2012 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the show’s Broadway Debut, a spectacular arena staged production toured all across the UK and Australia. For the casting of the titular role, BBC presented a live casting search TV series entitled SUPERSTAR where all of the UK can vote their best standout performer. The winner was Ben Forster (now a huge star of London’s West End). In addition to Forster, the cast also included Melanie C (aka Sporty Spice) of The Spice Girls as “Mary Magdalene”, acclaimed Radio and Television star Chris Moyles as “King Herod”, and Tony and Olivier Award winning composer, comedian, and actor Tim Minchin (Matilda The Musical on Broadway, Groundhog Day Musical) as “Judas”. The tour stop in Birmingham was filmed at the NECBirmingham and is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Following the success of the UK leg, the arena touring production was originally also supposed to tour the US in 2014 (which was to also include a stop in our very own NYC at The Garden). However it was cancelled without a warning or explanation due to financial troubles.
The US Touring company was supposed to include Forster reprising the role of “Jesus” and a full line up of acclaimed Pop, Rock, and R&B recording artists. The US All star cast was supposed to include Incubus’ brandon boyd as “Judas”, Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams as “Mary Magdalene”, ‘N Sync’s JC Chasez Official as “Pontius Pilate”, and Public Image Ltd. the salon’s John Lydon Official as “King Herod”.
