Happy 105th Birthday to another one of Broadway’s most legendary houses…. the Cort Theatre. It’s named after John Cort, one of the most famous impresarios in American history. He commissioned Scottish architect Thomas W. Lamb to build an intimate theater featuring a fa?ade inspired by the Petit Trianon in Versailles. The 1,082 seat theater opened on this day with a production of PEG O’ MY HEART (starring Laurette Taylor).
From there, the Cort Theatre has been home to some of the most successful plays and musicals ever including The Princess Pat, Captain Applejack, Uncle Vanya, Antignone, The Father (starring Grace Kelly), The Diary of Anne Frank (starring Susan Strasberg), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (starring Gene Wilder), Boeing-Boeing, See The Jaguar (starring James Dean), Only in America (starring Alan Alda), Sunrise at Campobello (starring James Earl Jones), Red, White, & Maddox (starring Christopher Lloyd), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (the debut play of August Wilson), There Was A Girl (starring Jane Fonda), A Moon for the Misbegotten, Sarafina!, The Heiress (starring Cherry Jones), Freak (starring John Leguizamo), Hollywood Arms (written as an autobiographical play by Carol Burnett), A Year With Frog and Toad, The Little Dog Laughed, Barefoot in the Park, A View from the Bridge (starring Scarlette Johansson), Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Broadway (starring Emilia Clarke), Bright Star: A New Musical (the writing debut of Steve Martin), and most recently Indecent on Broadway (the Broadway debut of acclaimed Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel).
The recently show that just ended was a short lived Broadway revival of M. Butterfly (directed by Julie Taymor).
