Broadway is PUTTING IT TOGETHER again. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine?s legendary musical Sunday in the Park with George is coming back to the Great White Way this Winter reopening the Hudson Theatre this Winter. It will star Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role and Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford as Dot. This production (which originally premiered at New York City Center) will run for a strictly limited engagement. Previews will begin February 11, 2017, Opening Night will be February 23rd, 2017, and will run till April 23rd, 2017.

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (inspired by the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat) originally premiered Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 1983 starring Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters for only 25 performances. It transferred a year later to the Booth Theatre where it ran for 639 performances. The original production was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 1984 including Best Musical and won only 2 for it’s set and lighting designs. In addition, the original production was filmed for PBS in 1985 and is still available on DVD. It later went on to tour, play London’s West End, and around the world.

The most recent revival of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE happened in 2008 (following an acclaimed 2005 West End revival engagement). The revival which starred it’s 2005 West End revival leads Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell played Roundabout Theatre Company’s Studio 54 for a total of 181 performances.
