FLASHBACK FRIDAY: We are just 2 days away from NBC’s live spring musical event Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert and we continue sharing little throwbacks from some of the previous productions of the legendary rock opera.

This throwback is from the musical’s first ever Broadway revival. From the 2000 Tony Awards, Glenn Carter as “Jesus”, future The Voice contestant Tony Vincent (now back on Broadway in Rocktopia) as “Judas”, and the cast perform a medley of GETHSAMANE and the showstopping title song.

This production was originally conceived in 1996 in London’s West End running for only a year and a half and did not arrive on the Great White Way till 2000. It played Broadway’s Ford Center for the Performing Arts (now the Lyric Theatre) for only 161 performances. It also went on to receive a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical but lost the category.

FUN FACT: During it’s initial London engagement, the cast also featured legendary rock star Alice Cooper who is reprising his performance of “King Herrod” in this Sunday’s upcoming live televised concert presentation.

In addition, the production was also captured on film in 1999 and later aired on PBS. This version was made specifically for video starring Glenn Carter (before bringing it to Broadway) as “Jesus”. That version was the first time the musical was set in a more modern day setting. In addition, that production is also still available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Be sure to tune in to Sunday’s live musical event.
