More fun is coming our way including this current abridged version of The 94th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade just 18 DAYS AWAY. Since we are still following COVID-19 safety precautions, many parts of New York’s MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET will be done a little differently. In the meantime, we’re giving you Theater fans the ultimate throwback. We are presenting our TOP 30 BROADWAY AT MACY'S COUNTDOWN playing you our favorite previous performances from the Great Bright Way that has taken part in this National Treasure kicking off the holiday season.
At # 18 on our countdown, we travel back in time to New York City in the year 1899. Based on a true story, it follows a group of poor orphaned newsboys who are exploited beyond reason by their bosses as they set out to enact change and are met by the ruthlessness of big business. This is Disney's Newsies. Based on the 1992 cult classic Disney film of the same name, the musical features a score by Alan Menken, Jac Redford, and Jack Feldman along with a book by Harvey Fierstein.
From the 2012 CBS telecast direct from the stage of Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre, Kara Lindsay as "Katherine Plumber" and the heartthrob cast perform the toe-tapping Act 2 opener showstopper KING OF NEW YORK.
NEWSIES originally debuted in 1992 as a film released in Movie Theaters back in 1992. It was a huge Box Office flop including negative reviews. However, NEWSIES earned the respect of audiences a few months later when the original film was released video along with it airing on the Disney Channel. It instantly earned a huge cult following. Many years later with Disney becoming a huge triumph for its work on the Great Bright Way, fans petitioned Alan Menken and Disney Theatrical an idea of adapting the cult classic as a full scale Broadway show. The team accepted the idea and began hard work on the production. It had its early development reading and workshop labs from 2009-2011.
The show had its official world premiere at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse in the Fall of 2011. The engagement was a triumph sold out smash hit. With the overwhelming response, NEWSIES officially arrived on Broadway in the Spring of 2012 at the Nederlander Theatre. The Broadway run originally was set to play a limited engagement through the Summer of 2012. However due to a massive fan base and people wanting to see it, it became an open ended run till its 2014 closure.
