BREAKING NEWS: New York’s legendary Metropolitan Opera is set to reopen its doors next month for the first time in over a year and half. That first performance since March 2020 will be a one night only presentation of Verdi’s Requiem.
It’s set to be performed on September 11th, 2021 which will also be a tribute to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of that day’s horrific day of tragic events.
Conducted by Maestro Yannick Nezet-Seguin and accompanied by The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, it will feature the unbelievable talents of some of The Met’s unbelievable talents consisting of….
For those who may not know, Giuseppe Verdi‘s adaptation of the REQUIEM mass is basically the setting of the Catholic funeral mass for four soloists, a huge choir and orchestra. When Verdi composed it, it was done in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired.
Tickets for this special performance will be going out first to the families of the brave men, women, and children of the brave heroes of the 9/11 terror attacks. Remaining tickets will go on sale for $25 starting August 27th, 2021.
Since we’re also still coping with this ongoing time of the COVID-19 pandemic, people stepping back into the Met will be required to show proof of being fully vaccinated and wear your face masks for the entire performance.
For those who can’t get into the Opera House, REQUIEM will also bring back the Met’s tradition of outdoor opening night streams outside. It will be played on a giant screen outside the Met (right in the center of Lincoln Center campus) with the façade of the house bathed in blue as part of the citywide 9/11 Tribute in Lights.
Also, the performance will air on PBS part of its Award winning Great Performances at the Met series.
From there, the actual Operas at the Met will officially kick off its season starting September 27th, 2021 with the debut of Terrence Blanchard’s FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES.
