Watch Cynthia Erivo Perform the Iconic Aria ?Nessun Dorma,? Stepping in for Aretha Franklin | Playbi…

Do you remember that time in 1998 when Aretha Franklin filled in for the late Luciano Pavarotti Official who was sick during the 1998 Grammys perform a soulful rendition of the iconic tenor aria NESSUN DORMA?!

Well it happened again this past weekend. This time Aretha Franklin herself got sick and couldn’t perform NESSUN DORMA at last night’s Washington National Opera’s Trading Voices Gala event. Filling in for Franklin performing that iconic song was one of Broadway’s very own, last year’s Tony winning actress of the Award winning revival of The Color Purple Musical herself, the one and only Cynthia Erivo.

Not only Aretha Franklin and Cynthia Erivo are the only 2 females that performed NESSUN DORMA (usually sung by a male tenor). Another female that still brings down the house with her classically trained soprano rendition of the aria was Sarah Brightman (the original “Christine” of The Phantom of the Opera) who recorded it on her 1999 album EDEN and has been performed majority of her World Concert Tours.

Tissues out please!!! Bravo Cynthia!!!

The Tony winner?s performance at the Kennedy Center paralleled Franklin filling in for Luciano Pavarotti at the 1998 Grammys.
