We are continuing our Hairspray throwback leading to tonight’s live NBC presentation of the 2003 Tony Award winning Best Musical. Before Hairspray became a musical, it initially started as a 1988 cult film directed John Waters.

The music was not the score that we all know now from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, it was real life 60’s jukebox songs (LET’S TWIST AGAIN, MASHED POTATOE, SHAKE A TAIL FEATHER, THE BUG)

The film featured an amazing diverse cast including….
Ricki Lake (in her debut role) as Tracy Turnblad,
Divine (the original drag queen himself) as Edna Turnblad,
Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick (aka Vitamin C) as Amber Von Tussle,
Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry as Velma Von Tussle,
Leslie Ann Powers as Penny Pingleton,
Jerry Stiller as Wilbur Turnblad,
Sonny Bono as Franklin Von Tussle (who was cut from the musical),
and more.

It’s original film release in the Theater was very moderate making only $8 million. However, it got more of a larger audience when it came out on video in 1990. However, when the musical version arrived on Broadway 2002, the film even got more attention.

Who is excited to see this all new remake for TV?!

Hairspray Live begins in 4 hours!!
