BREAKING NEWS: 6 time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald is set to return to Broadway this Spring in a new revival of Tony winner (and lifelong friend) Terrence McNally's Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune this Spring 2019. The celebrated versatile star of stage and screen will play "Frankie" opposite Oscar and Tony nominee Michael Shannon as "Johnny".
Under the direction of Arin Arbus and produced by Tom Kirdahy, this new production will be a strictly limited 16 week engagement at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre (currently the home of Anastasia The Musical which both Kirdahy and McNally are involved with). Preview begin May 4th, 2019, Opening Night is scheduled for MAy 30th, 2019, and will run through August 25th, 2019. The show also returns to Broadway at a very interesting timing…. the 30th Anniversary of when the play was produced and McNally's upcoming 80th Birthday.
Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune is considered as one of Terrence McNally's greatest masterpieces. It's a 2 person play telling the romantic story of a waitress and a short order cook on a first date that becomes a one night stand.
The show originally premiered Off Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club in 1987. Under the direction of Paul Benedict, the world premiere production starred Oscar winners Kathy Bates and F. Murray Abraham. It first started on STAGE II for 6 weeks and then transferred to STAGE 1 and the Westside Theatre (continuing with Bates alongside Kenneth Welsh). It went on to receive several Awards including the Obie Awards and a Drama Desk nomination.
The play had its official ON Broadway Debut in 2002 at the Belasco Theatre running for 15 previews and 243 regular performances, Under the direction of Joe Mantello, this Broadway premiere cast starred Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci (and then later Rosie Perez and Joe Pantoliano). The Broadway premiere was nominated for 2 Tony nominations for Best Revival of a Play and Best Actor in a Play (for Tucci) both lost both catagories.
