WAKE UP BROADWAY FANS! It’s getting closer to Broadway’s biggest night of the year only 11 days away and we are once again waking up you guys up with some of our favorite performances over the past 70 years on our Top 30 Tony Awards countdown.
WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT at #11 on our countdown is not your typical rock musical. This show was highly requested by you guys. It is a rock concert experience featuring gender swapping singers and a rock band. This is of course Stephen Trask and John Cameron Mitchell‘s HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH.
From the 2014 telecast, Tony winners Neil Patrick Harris and Lena Hall?perform the showstopper SUGAR DADDY.
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH first premiered Off Broadway at the Jane Street Theatre in 1998 playing 857 performances with John Cameron Mitchell (later future Tony winner Michael Cerveris, Kevin Cahoon, and Asa Somers) in the title role. It then started playing International productions around the world and became a 2001 film (with Mitchell reprising his role), The show had its official Broadway premiere in 2014 for 529 performances at the Belasco Theatre. HEDWIG on Broadway was headlined by a lineup of celebrities strutting the blonde wig and rocking out including Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, John Cameron Mitchell (Reprising his performance), Darren Criss, and Taye Diggs. It also featured Lena Hall (and later Rebecca Naomi Jones) as Yitzhak. The Broadway premiere was nominated for 8 Tonys that year winning 4 including Best Revival Of A Musical and Best Performance by A Leading Actor / Featured Actress in A Musical (for Harris and Hall). The Broadway production is set to embark on it’s 1st US National Tour this October with Darren Criss and Lena Hall reprising their performances from Broadway. In addition, Hall (not only will be playing Yitzhak) but also Hedwig during a few performances.

Continuing at #22, follows 3 women are on the verge of becoming superstars. However, the price of fame can cause a whole lot of drama. This is all shown as an example in DREAMGIRLS. The musical was written?Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen inspired by the story of Diana Ross and the?Supremes.
From the 1982 telecast, the legendary Jennifer Holiday leads the cast performing the show’s confrontation scene featuring IT’S ALL OVER and the show’s signature song AND I AM TELLING YOU I AM NOT GOING.
DREAMGIRLS first premiered at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre in 1981 running for 1,521 performances. It was nominated for 13 Tony Awards in 1982 winning 6 including Best Performance By A Leading Actress in a Musical (for Jennifer Holiday). The musical has productions all over the world. It was last seen in NYC back in 2009 at the Apollo Theatre, Harlem. Of course, DREAMGIRLS is known also known for being a triumph on screen back in 2006 featuring an incredible all star cast nominated for 6 Oscars in 2007 winning 2 including Best Supporting Actress (for Jennifer Hudson).
