THROWBACK THURSDAY: We are 3 days away from NBC’s first ever SPRING EDITION of a live televised musical which is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. In honor of that, we at New York Broadway Tours will be doing little throwback posts sharing some of the best moments from previous productions of the legendary rock opera.

This first throwback is actually from the musical’s Broadway Debut. From the 1972 Tony Awards, Jeff fenholt in the title role, Yvonne Elliman as “Mary Magdalene”, and members of the original Broadway cast perform a medley of THE TEMPLE, GETHSAMANE, EVERYTHING’S ALRIGHT, and I DON’T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM.

Before being put out on stage, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was originally conceived as a # 1 Billboard chart topping concept album in the 70’s. With the success of the original recording, a full scale production was put on. The musical arrived on Broadway in 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre (now the Times Square Church) running for 711 performances. The original cast featured…

Jeff Fenholdt as “Jesus”,
Yvonette Elliman as “Mary Magadalene”,
Tony winner Ben Vereen as “Judas”,
and more.

The original Broadway run went on to receive 5 Tony Awards in 1972 but lost all of it’s categories. From there, the show went on to become a worldwide hit.

Be sure to tune in this Sunday night to see this spectacular one night only staging of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR like never before on NBC at 8pm.

How amazing was this performance?
