CALLING ALL SINGERS!!!! The Off Broadway Theater company Second Stage Theater does an annual gala to honor some of the most amazing people in our industry who left a mark on the company. This year's honoree is the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning composer Tom Kitt. Because this year's gala is going to be virtual instead of a usual formal gathering event, there's a huge surprise and they're calling out BOTH Next to Normal and Musical Theater fans and performers to help!!!!
Between now and September 4th, 2020, all you have to do is prepare a self-tape video of you singing the song LIGHT (The Finale number from Kitt's breakout musical Next to Normal). What will be done is ALL VIDEOS will be combined into one master video showing aspiring performers and fans from all over the world singing this beautiful and powerful song. There will be 6 pieces of harmony to sing (since there are 6 characters in Next to Normal) and you can choose what best fits your range (and you get to be your favorite "Next to Normal" character for one day). The words are so meaningful especially for the time we're living in today with this continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Live Theater is still shutdown and we all need a little LIGHT on that stage.
The musical itself NEXT TO NORMAL in case anyone may not remember, tells the story of a dysfunctional suburban family. It mainly centers on the Mother who is suffering from mental illness and the way it effects her family. It had its world premiere at Second Stage in 2008 before going on to Washington D.C.'s Arena Stage, and eventually our Broadway backyard in 2009. The Broadway production played the Booth Theatre for 21 previews and 733 regular performances. It won 3 Tony Awards in 2009 including Best Score (for Tom Kitt and his collaborator Brian Yorkey). It also made Broadway history as one of the few musicals ever to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
See the link below for more information on how to create your best performance videos EVER and help honor an unforgettable mastermind.
How exciting is this?!!!
