THEATER THROWBACK: When things go wrong in a live performance, the show still goes on. At a mattinae performance of the Emerald City 1st National Touring company of WICKED The Musical at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton, WI back in 2009, a fire alarm went off at the top of the show's Act 2 climatic number NO GOOD DEED. As the alarm goes off, Meredith Kaye Clark (who was on for the lead role of the smart, fiery, and very misunderstood "Elphaba") kept performing until an announcement was made for everyone for everyone to evacuate the theater. From there, Clarke walked off stage in character… notice the cape flick. As soon as the go ahead was made for everyone to come back inside, the show continued where it left off.
This was not Clark's first time experiencing something crazy during a live performance and staying in character. Also during her time on tour in WICKED going on as "Elphaba" at a performance of the show at the KeyBank State Theatre at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio, a drunken, obscenity-filled woman was causing a scene non-stop screaming during the show's beautiful soft moment I'M NOT THAT GIRL. Clark stayed in the moment and singing the beautiful ballad on stage while the ushers and security arrested the drunk woman. At the end of the song, Clark received a standing ovation afterwards for being a trooper.
Meredith, we consider you as WONDER ELPHABA. Nothing stops you from performing even from distractions in the audience.
