Even the big stars give the understudies credit. For the last 2 days, Christian Dante White (previously appeared in Shuffle Along on Broadway and The Book of Mormon on Broadway) has been going on for Tony nominee and Olivier Award winner Gavin Creel as “Cornelius Hackl” in the current revival of Hello, Dolly on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre.

Since the show is still in previews, the Ensemble members that also cover principal roles do not start put-in understudy rehearsals till after the official opening night.

White (who usually is in the Ensemble of HELLO, DOLLY) went on last minute with no rehearsal and still knew all of the blocking of the “Cornelius Hack” track. At the curtain call, the show’s leading lady Bette Midler (who usually bows last) stepped aside and brought White out to take the final bow.

Congrats Christian on an acclaimed “Cornelius” debut at a moment’s notice.
