The Magical Music for Life Foundation 2014 in Times Square

Magical-Music-for-Life-Foundation

Magical Music for Life foundation is thrilled to present its third annual??Tunes in Times Square??benefit concert May 4, 2014 from 10am-6pm, in Father Duffy Park, Times Square, NY. We are especially delighted to be donating to this wonderful cause once again! Please check them out and or donate if you can!

http://www.magicalmusic.org

Magical Music for Life’s mission is to develop and produce a wide range of musical projects that can provide a positive approach to everyday life for young children and their families. As a way to reinforce self-confidence and further self-esteem, each of these projects is designed to enable children to participate with professionals in the performance and/or recording of these productions.

The Magical Music for Life Foundation was formed in 1999 by parents concerned with the messages children were receiving from the music, TV, movies, advertising and video games they were exposed to. Bombarded with age inappropriate media that often focuses on sex and violence, it became clear to them that their children were missing the wholesome messages that were so much a part of their youth and the generations before them.

The founders concluded that parents, teachers and other guardians of our children were at a disadvantage in competing with these well-funded commercial ventures. How could a parent’s five minute oral explanation that “fighting is bad” compete with a three to five million dollar production of a video game that a child may play for hours, a game in which points are based upon body counts.

Working under the premise that music is an effective and popular medium for communicating with children, the founders pulled together a team of professional musicians, actors, writers and producers to use the power of music in a more constructive, responsible fashion.

The foundation’s two musicals,?The Adventures of Zak?and?Russell, the Hermit Crab, were created, written and produced as family musicals, with wholesome messages for children that would bring families together to enjoy the magic of live musical theatre, raise money for pediatric charities and offer some children a chance to sing on stage with a professional cast of actors. Many inner-city children have had extremely limited exposure to live theatre, and those in pediatric hospitals benefit greatly from the diversion and joy of a live musical performance. These are two important target audiences for Magical Music’s outreach efforts.

Since April, 2000,?The Adventures of Zak?and?Russell, the Hermit Crab?have been performed in numerous theatre spaces in 7 states as well as at the White House in Washington, D.C. Fifty three charities and special events used the show which played to over 27,000 audience members. Over 585 children have shared the stage with the professional actors, singing in the guest chorus in the finale.

New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF)

nymf

Today I volunteered at The New York Musical Theatre Festival where I helped put placards together and passed out brochures and programs to New Yorkers on the street and we donated gift certificates to their annual gala.

If YOU love musicals I definitely recommend checking out this festival. They are ALL musicals and they have special events and workshops going on for 3 weeks beginning next week!

They are running 30 shows from July 8th-28th and they are celebrating their 10 year anniversary! Visit their website for info on purchasing tickets! If you are interested in volunteering they could use more support too!

http://www.nymf.org

MISSION & HISTORY

NYMF exists to ensure the future vitality of America?s greatest art form by providing an affordable way for artists to mount professional productions that reach their peers, industry leaders, and musical theatre audiences, and by serving as the preeminent launching pad for stylistically, thematically, and culturally diverse new musicals.

Like any great art form, musical theatre is shaped by the events and philosophies of the day. The strength and vitality of musical theatre lie in its ability to stay fresh and relevant. It was with that idea in mind, ten years ago, that the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) was created ? to provide an effective platform to introduce new shows, new perspectives, and new blood into the musical theatre canon.

The first Festival, staged in 2004, featured over thirty new fully staged full-length musicals and was met with critical and popular acclaim. More than 350 shows have premiered at the Festival since then, featuring more than 8,000 artists and entertaining more than 300,000 audience members. The musicals and artists introduced at NYMF have, in turn, gone on to further successes on and Off-Broadway, across the country, and around the globe ? reaching literally millions of theatergoers worldwide.

This year, NYMF was honored with a Drama Desk Award recognizing its first decade of creating and nurturing new musical theatre, ensuring the future of this essential art form.

Here’s a little more info:

Rockaway Theatre Company

p_0004

My first production I was in when I made it to New York was in Crimes Of The Heart directed by Peggy Press. I was cast as Lenny the older sister who owned the house and was the heart of the sisters. It was an amazing cast, production, and theatre that I will always treasure as my first experience in New York. Even though it isn’t BROADWAY the amazing talent and quality behind the work is equivalent.

Since the theatre is located in Fort Tilden all the way out by the water when hurricane Sandy hit they were hit hard. They are coming back with a vengeance and could use some assistance in fund raising. I loved the theatre and the way everyone treated each other like family. It was a home and it deserves to be rectified.

I am happy to share that they are having their annual Rockaway Cafe Production starting July 19th and I highly recommend visiting the theatre or donating to their cause. I did! Look for New York Broadway Tours at their special intermission raffle and 50/50 drawings!

The Rockaway Theatre Company, Inc. is a not-for- profit NYS 501C3 organization located at Fort Tilden in The National Park Service Gateway National Recreation Area. We strive to improve the quality of life for residents of Rockaway and surrounding communities by bringing them live quality entertainment at a nominal cost. Over the course of the last fourteen years, we have earned a reputation as the best that community theater has to offer.
During our tenure at our present location we have been proud to offer full season line-ups of professional quality theatrical productions to the members of our community each year at very reasonable prices. We also provide opportunities for performers of all ages to showcase their talents.
Our Young People?s Theatre Workshops are extremely popular. They are open to children between the ages of 6 and 18. In class, youngsters learn the ins and outs of theatrical production and develop and hone their dramatic skills. There are usually 30 sessions culminating in a full scale musical theater production performed for audiences by workshop students on our main stage. In addition, we offer evening adult workshops in dance, acting, musical theatre and theatre tech. Classes offered in our theater are taught by licensed educators and professionals in various areas of instruction. They are offered to the community as a public service and tuition is nominal as our Company assumes the bulk of the operating costs In an attempt to keep our ticket prices affordable for our patrons, we have instituted a reduced-price season subscription and reduced-price tickets for seniors and children.

Our community service efforts include free performances, both in our theater and in various other sites, to benefit North Shore Animal League America, The Children?s Diabetes Foundation, Rockaway and Brooklyn Chambers of Commerce, NYPD 100th Precinct Community Council, The Addabbo Family Health Center, Gateway National Recreation Area and many other worthy institutions.

Unfortunately, we were forced to bring our activities at the Post Theatre to an abrupt halt at the end of October, 2012 when our theater was ravaged by superstorm Sandy. We suffered many devastating losses including irreparable damage to our seats, our equipment, our lighting, amplifiers, microphones, musical instruments, etc. The replacement of most of these items was not covered by our insurance. Much of our house, stage and dressing room areas were underwater for a significant amount of time which necessitates massive commercial dry out and mold treatment before our building can be deemed safe for both adults and children to resume activities. The cost of this mold remediation, building renovation and equipment replacement is astronomical and we have already suffered major financial losses due to prolonged cancellation of previously scheduled programs.

At this point, we have been denied any federal or state grants which we have sought in an effort to cover these expenses. We are appealing to the public and to various charitable groups to assist us in bringing our theater back to the level of a safe, operational cultural institution.

We are gratified to observe that our audiences have grown steadily over the past fourteen years and we are anxious to have the opportunity to, once again, offer quality entertainment and educational services to our ever increasing public, hopefully in the very near future. Now, more than ever, Rockaway residents need the joy of live theater in their lives.

Please help us bring it to them.

It’s a red carpet world and you deserve to walk on it!
