New Years Resolutions and “Feed Me” from Little Shop of Horrors

So, I (Amada) was listening to Pandora’s Book Of Mormon radio station at work today and I had this amusing thought…

The song “Feed Me” from Little Shop of Horrors could be compared with our EGOs setting up our New Year’s resolutions and goals.

Read the lyrics below and see what I mean….

Audrey II sings:?

Feed me, feed me, feed me
Feed me Seymour
Feed me all night long

That’s right, boy!
You can do it

Feed me, Seymour
Feed me all night long
‘Cause if you feed me Seymour
I can grow up big and strong

Would you like a Cadillac car
Or a guest-shot on Jack Paar?
How about a date with Heady Lemarr?
You gonna get it
If you want it, baby

How would ya like to be a big wheel?
Dining out for every meal
I’m the plant that can make it all real
You’re gonna get it

Hey, I’m your Genie
I’m your friend
I’m your willin’ slave
Take a chance, feed me yeah

You know what kinda eats
The kinda red hot treats
The kinda sticky licky sweets I crave

Ow! Come on, Seymour
Don’t be a putz
Trust me and your life will surely
Rival King Tut’s
Show a little initiative, boy
Work up some guts
And you’ll get it

And then Seymour answers him with:?

I don’t know, I don’t know
I have so, so many strong reservations…

In truth it seems like we are always excited about taking a chance for the New Year and creating change and then about 30-60 days in we fall off the motorcycle…*

{Dentist:?Stupid woman!?Crashed, what a freakin’ scatter brain

Audrey: I’m sorry, Doctor

Dentist: Falls off the motorcycle}

Ouch!

But what if we made it so that we never fail? What if we took away goal setting and instead replaced them with systems and processes? This way when we are focusing every day on actually setting the balls in motion when it wasn’t there before, we will be able to change our habits and then enjoy life without feeling bad or having reservations if a piece of cake is offered at a party or you take the elevator instead of the stairs one day. We should try to remember that life is going to have curve balls and is never just black and white. It’s full of all kinds of colors and sticky licky sweets!
