FLASHBACK FRIDAY: For many of us who saw NBC’s Hairspray Live this past Wednesday, the only scene we (and those who know the stage version) have to confess that we wish that was in the live production was the Act 2 opener THE BIG DOLLHOUSE. It’s considered a toe-tapping and showstopping fan favorite.

For those who don’t know much about it, let’s set it up and beware of the spoiler alert. As we saw in the live presentation, Tracy Turnblad (the main character) gets arrested for starting the whole protest against segregation and assaulting Velma Von Tussle with her sign.

In the stage musical version of Hairspray, Tracy, Edna, Motormouth, Penny, Velma, Amber, Lil Inez, and all the colored women get arrested. In this Act 2 opener, all of the women are horrified and shocked being thrown into jail and are under the watchful eye of the matron. Wilbur frees everyone out but however, Velma and the guard do not let Tracy out.

This is a clip of the original Broadway cast (including Harvey Fierstein, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Mary Bond Davis, Kerry Butler, Laura Bell Bundy, Linda Hart, Jackie Hoffman, and the female ensemble) performing THE BIG DOLLHOUSE.

Who here wished the song was still in the live production?
