BREAKING NEWS: Broadway favorite Heidi Blickenstaff ([title of show], The Little Mermaid, and Something Rotten The Musical) has been tapped to star in Disney’s upcoming musical TV film version of Freaky Friday.
This version will be based on the acclaimed stage musical adaptation which features a score by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winners Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal, If/Then Musical) and a book by Bridget Carpenter (who will do the screenplay for this new TV film version).
Blickenstaff will reprise the role of suburban mom “Katherine” which created in the world premiere production at Signature Theatre in Virginia and later went on to La Jolla Playhouse in California.
The new TV movie also star Cozi Zuehlsdorff (Disney Channel’s Dolphin Tale and Liv & Maddie) as Blickenstaff’s onscreen teenage daughter “Ellie” (originated on the stage by Emma Hunton).
FREAKY FRIDAY tells the story of an exhausted mother and her teenage daughter who at first do not get along. However, one day they wake up and discover that magically their bodies have been SWAPPED! Along the way, they embark on a journey of discovering who each other is. This will mark as the 4th film adaptation of the classic novel by Mary Rodgers (yup the Daughter of the late Richard Rodgers). The original Disney film was released in 1976 starring Tony winner Barbara Harris and a breakout performance by a young Jodie Foster. The 1st remake was released in as a TV movie 1995 for Disney and American Broadcasting Company starring Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffmann. The 2nd and recent version was released in 2003 for Disney as a featured film once again which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and a clean Lindsay Lohan.
This TV movie remake of FREAKY FRIDAY is expecting to be released for Disney Channel Fall 2018.
