ON THIS DAY: 95 years ago came one of the most shocking moments that ever happened in Broadway history. Playwright Sholem Asch finally brought his play GOD OF VENGEANCE to Broadway where Opening Night was Closing Night. The play was known for being very controversial because of a scene between 2 female lovers making out in the rain. During the scene on Broadway, people were shocked and the entire company was arrested after the final curtain and were charged for obscenity.

The creation of the play later inspired Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel to create her successful play Indecent on Broadway which is about the making of GOD OF VENGEANCE. The show was a hit Off Broadway before making it’s way to Broadway’s Cort Theatre last year playing a total of 143 performances. The play was well received by critics winning 2 Tony Awards including Best Direction of a Play (for Rebecca Taichman. In addition, the week right before it closed, INDECENT was filmed for PBS and BroadwayHD.
