RISE & SHINE Broadway fans. It’s 14 days till we kick off the holiday season with the 90th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and our TOP 20 BROADWAY AT THE MACY’S PARADE COUNTDOWN continues playing you the best of performances from the past NBC and CBS telecasts.

At # 14 on our countdown, we take you under the big top for a story of a young prince wanting to find the true meaning and significance of his life. This is Stephen Schwartz’s legendary smash hit Pippin the Musical.

From the 2013 telecast, Tony winner Patina Miller as the Leading Player, Matthew James Thomas in the title role, and the cast of that year’s Tony Award winning Best Revival perform a medley of the classics CORNER OF THE SKY & the opening MAGIC TO DO.

PIPPIN originally started as a class assignment by Stephen Schwartz at Carnegie Mellon University. Schwartz continues to expand the show and it premiered on Broadway in 1972 at the Imperial Theatre for 1,944 performances. The most recent revival in 2013 which won a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical (as seen in this video) originally started at American Repertory Theater in Massachusetts before transferring to Broadway’s Music Box Theatre (coincidentally next door from the Imperial) where it played 746 performances. A Non-Equity Tour of the recent revival is currently in the works. Plus productions in schools, community, and regional theatres are still going on as well.

How about the circus spectacular themed performance?

FUN FACT: The role of The Leading Player has been played either by a Male or a Female. The original production’s Ben Vereen won a Tony for Best Performance By A Leading Actor in a Musical for the role in 1972 and The revival’s Patina Miller won for Best Leading Actress in A Musical for the role in 2013.
