WHAT’S GOING ON BROADWAY FANS?! We are just 9 days away from Broadway’s biggest night of the year, the 71st Annual Tony Awards. We have more roof-shaking performances from some of the past telecasts on our TOP 30 TONY AWARDS COUNTDOWN.
At # 9, we go to a local diner somewhere in the south where a pregnant pie maker is trying to escape her abusive husband and start her life over. This is Waitress the Musical. The show features a score by Grammy nominated superstar Sara Bareilles and a book by Jessie Nelson. It’s based on the acclaimed 2007 film of the same name directed by the late Adrienne Shelly (wife of Jessie Nelson).
From last year’s 2016 telecast, Sara Bareilles, Tony winner Jessie Mueller, and the cast perform a medley of OPENING UP & the 11:00 heartbreaking and powerhouse moving number SHE USED TO BE MINE.
WAITRESS originally premiered in 2015 at the American Repertory Theater in Massachusetts before transferring to Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre where it continues to play to packed houses 8 times a week. The show so far has played over 400 performances. The cast stars Tony winner Jessie Mueller (later currently Sara Bareilles and soon to be Betsy Wolfe) as “Jenna”, Kimiko Glenn (later Glee favorite Jenna Ushkowitz & currently Caitlin Houlahan) as “Dawn”, Tony nominee Keala Settle (later currently Charity Ang?l Dawson) as “Becky”, Drew Gehling (later currently Chris Diamantopoulos) as “Dr. Jim Pomatter”, Nick Cordero (later William Poop and currently Tony nominee Will Swenson) as “Earl”, and much more.
WAITRESS is currently set to launch a US National Tour this October 2017 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Who is in a pie mood because of this performance? Who is amazed by Sara Bareilles and Jessie Mueller singing their faces off?
