Only With You - Nine (2003 Broadway Revival) - CBS Thanksgiving Day Parade [27-Sep-2003]
GOOD MORNING BROADWAY FANS! We are exactly 21 DAYS away as New York City once again rings in the holiday season with it’s iconic MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET…. The 95th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. We at New York Broadway Tours are getting us back into the groove especially since Broadway is also back with many of our favorite performances from previous telecasts on our TOP 30 BROADWAY AT MACY’S COUNTDOWN. Are you ready for more musical numbers?!!
At #21 on our countdown, we travel to beautiful Venice, Italy in the year 1960. There, we meet a soon-to-be 40 Italian film director at a crossroads as he tries to balance his professionalism and personal life while having an affair with multiple women all at once. Not just one, two, three, four, five, (nope not SIX), nor even, or eight…. But NINE!!! Based on Federico Fellini’s semi-autobiographical film 8 ½, the musical features an original score by Maury Yeston and a book by Arthur Kopit.
From the 2003 CBS telecast, Award winning screen and stage star John Stamos as “Gudio”, Tony nominee Mary Stuart Masterson as “Luisa”, Sara Gettelfinger as “Carla”, and the late Tony nominee Rebecca Luker as “Claudia” from the recent Broadway revival having a little R&R in New York’s famed Central Park. Here they are singing ONLY WITH YOU.
NINE was first conceived as a musical by Maury Yeton in 1973. The composer was a huge fan of the original Italian film 8 ½. When he first saw it as a teenager, he was so moved by the story’s theme. Ironically with Federico Fellini’s direction, he wanted the film to be in recognition of his prior body of work, which included six full-length films, two short films, and one film that he co-directed. With Yeston renaming this musical adaptation as NINE, the title itself added another half-credit to Fellini’s output. It was also like adding one more number. The show would go on to be developed through early reading and workshop labs in 1982 and held in the former rooftop supper club theater above Broadway’s dark and closed (at the time) New Amsterdam Theatre. It went through various changes being mainly Male and Females together. Eventually, the show would be mainly all females plus the musical’s leading man.
NINE officially debuted on Broadway a few months later 1982 at the 46th Street Theatre (now the Richard Rodgers Theatre) running for 19 previews and 729 regular performances. Under the direction of the great Tommy Tune and choreography by Thomie Walsh, the cast was led by….
Raúl Juliá (later Sergio Franchi & Bert Convy) as “Guido Contini”,
Karen Akers (later Maureen McGovern & Eileen Barnett) as “Luisa”,
Tony winner Liliane Montevecchi (later Tony winner Priscilla Lopez) as “Liliane”,
Kathi Moss as “La Saraghina”,
Anita Morris (later Wanda Richert) as “Carla”,
Shelly Burch (later Barbara Stock) as “Claudia”,
Tania Elg as “Gudio’s Mother”,
and more.
The original production was well received earning top honors. It was nominated for 12 Tony Awards winning 5 including BEST MUSICAL. It also was nominated for 10 Drama Desk Awards winning 9 including OUTSTANDING MUSICAL.
NINE would go on to launch a National Tour across North America plus productions in London’s West End (TWICE), in Australia, Sweden, Germany, and around the world.
The most recent Broadway revival of NINE happened in 2003. produced by Roundabout Theatre Company. This revival was based on one of the productions that did well Internationally in London’s West End back in 1996 at the Donmar Warehouse in London. It ran at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre for 23 previews and 283 regular performances. Under the direction of David Leveaux and choreographed by Jonathan Butterell, the cast was led by…
Stage and screen star Antonio Banderas (later John Stamos) as “Guido Contini”,
Tony nominee Mary Stuart Masterson as “Luisa”,
Tony winning legend Chita Rivera (later the late Tony nominated legend Eartha Kitt) as “Liliane”,
Tony winner Jane Krakowski (later Sara Gettelfinger) as “Carla”,
Tony winner Laura Benanti (later Rebecca Luker) as “Claudia”,
Myra Lucretia Taylor as “La Saraghina”,
and
Tony nominee Mary-beth Peil (later the late Marni Nixon) as “Guido’s Mother”.
This 2003 revival was nominated for 8 Tony Awards that year winning 2 consisting of BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL and BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL (for Jane Krakowski, who won her first Tony that night). It also got 6 Drama Desk Awards that year winning 3 including OUTSTANDING REVIVAL. Plus, Antonio Banderas and Mary Stuart Matterson were the recipients of the Theatre World Awards for their performances.
Along with its success on stage, NINE was also a smash hit on the big screen. The film version was released in 2009 from Miramax films from the same Oscar winning team of the film version of Chicago. It stayed true to all the great moments from the stage production plus Maury Yeston wrote some new songs for it. Under the direction and choreography by Rob Marshall, the cast included….
Daniel Day-Lewis as “Guido Contini”,
Marion Cotillard as “Luisa”,
Penélope Cruz as “Carla”,
Nicole Kidman as “Claudia”,
Dame Judi Dench as “Liliane”,
Fergie as “La Saraghina”,
and
Sophia Loren as “Guido’s Mother”.
Reviews for the film were mixed but the critics praised the Ensemble cast. It was nominated for several Awards including 4 Academy Awards including BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (for the newly written song TAKE IT ALL), 5 Golden Globes including BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY.
Today, NINE continues to be performed mainly in regional theaters, colleges, and around the world.

GOOD MORNING BROADWAY FANS!! New York’s MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET is just 22 DAYS AWAY. We got more of your favorite legendary Broadway musical numbers coming your way on our TOP 30 BROADWAY AT MACY’S COUNTDOWN. This is getting us all excited to ring in the holiday season with The 95th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This is continuing to make us feel great as we celebrate the triumphant return of Broadway after a rough shutdown. Here comes another showstopper.
At # 22 on our countdown, we take you deep in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village in the year of 1935. It tells the tale of 2 sisters from Ohio with big aspirations and dreams…. One sister is witty, awkward, and very resourceful with determination of being a writer. The other is that sweet, adorable, optimistic, and dreamy girl who wants to become an actress. This is their life in that…. Wonderful Town. The show features a legendary score by Leonard Bernstein along with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. It features a book Joseph A. Fields’s and Jerome Chodorov adapted from their real life previous play entitled MY SISTER EILEEN (which came based off of real life stories from the musical’s real-life character Ruth McKenney).
From the 2004 NBC Telecast, Brooke Shields as the witty and knowledgeable “Ruth McKenney” gets a side job promoting one of the hottest night clubs in Greenwich Village getting the company introduced to the latest jazz rage of them all. Here they are performing the toe-tapping SWING.
WONDERFUL TOWN had its world premiere run in 1952 in Philadelphia at the Forrest Theatre. Just several months later, heading into the following year of 1953, it premiered at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre where it ran for 559 performances. Under the direction of George Abbott and choreographed by Donald Saddler, the cast was led by….
Rosalind Russell (later Carol Channing) as “Ruth Sherwood”,
Edie Adams as “Eileen Sherwood”,
George Gaynes as “Robert “Bob” Baker”,
Cris Alexander as “Frank Lippencott”,
And more.
It was nominated and won 5 all of its Tony categories that year including BEST MUSICAL, BEST LEADING ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL (for Rosalind Russell), and BEST CHOREOGRAPHY (for Donald Saddler). In addition, Edie Adams was the recipient for the Theatre World Awards.
With the success of its Broadway run, the show would go on to debut overseas a year later in London’s West End playing the Prince’s Theatre (now the Shaftesbury Theatre) for only 207 performances. Interestingly, when it was revived there in 1983, it ran for over a year getting an Olivier Awards nomination as BEST NEW MUSICAL (even though it’s mainly considered as revival). However, it lost the category.
WONDERFUL TOWN would find its way back to the Big Apple in 2000. It originally was performed as a semi-staged concert production at New York City Center part of its ENCORES series. The production did so well, it took the creative team 2 years to expand the staging into a full length production marking it as the first Broadway revival. This Broadway transfer would not happen until 2003 playing the Al Hirschfeld Theatre for 16 previews and 497 regular performances. Under the direction and choreography by Kathleen Marshall, this revival cast was led by…
Donna Murphy (later Brooke Shields) as “Ruth Sherwood”,
Jennifer Westfield (later Jennifer Hope Wills) as “Eileen Sherwood”,
Greg Edelman as “Robert “Bob” Baker”,
Peter Benson as “Frank Lippencott”,
And more.
This revival of WONDERFUL TOWN was nominated for 4 Tony Awards including BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL, It would only go on to win for BEST CHOREOGRAPHY (for Kathleen Marshall), It also received several Drama Desk Award wins including OUTSTANDING LEADING ACTRESS (for Donna Murphy). Plus, Jennifer Westfield was the recipient for the Theatre World Award.
Along with its success on stage, WONDERFUL TOWN was only captured on camera once. In 1958, the musical was made into a live televised production on CBS. Under the direction of Mel Herbert plus staying true to the original stage production’s creative team, this cast was led by….
Rosalind Russell reprising her performance as “Ruth Sherwood”,
Jacquelyn McKeever as “Eileen Sherwood”,
Sydney Chaplin as “Robert “Bob” Baker”,
Cris Alexander reprising his performance as “Frank Lippencott”,
And more.
Today, WONDERFUL TOWN continues to be played around the world in schools, community, and regional theaters everywhere.
How jazzy was that performance?!!!

Lindsay Pearce expecting to return to WICKED on Broadway mid-December; DiNoia & Fox continue to fill in as “Elphaba”

No description available.

BREAKING NEWS: Lindsay Pearce announced that she is aiming to return to the Broadway company of WICKED around mid-December. The performer (best known for playing “Harmony” on Glee) has been out of the Award winning Stephen Schwartz musical just a week after it had just reopened on the Great Bright Way post pandemic this past September due to a leg injury. Pearce is taking extra precaution to take care of herself, heal, and recover.
She did reveal that she will start re-rehearsing the show at the end of of this month of November 30th, 2021.
Currently, Jennifer DiNoia is back on the broom DEFYING GRAVITY 8 times a week as “Elphaba” fulltime as Pearce continues to recover. For those who may not know, DiNoia has been playing the role of the misunderstood green girl on the past 14 YEARS. She has done it on 4 continents. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, DiNoia returned to the Broadway production in 2019 (after having previously did a year long fulltime Principal contract from 2016-2017) once again serving as the standby for “Elphaba” (being the 1st to go on in Pearce is out).
With DiNoia taking over once again as the main principal “Elphaba”, her usual track as the standby currently is now temporary being performed by another returning alumni cast member Alyssa Fox (most recently seen for the last 3 years as the standby for “Elsa” in Disney’s Frozen).
Continue to get better Lindsay.
We will see you back in OZ soon.
Thoughts?!!
