HELLO BROADWAY FANS. Who is ready to wake up for another set of showtunes over the past 70 years with our Top 30 Tony Awards?countdown? We are just 4 days away from Broadway’s biggest night of the year.
At #4 on our countdown, it’s “LIGHTS UP” on one of New York City’s most famous neighborhoods, meeting residents all with big dreams. Before earning more acclaim now with his hot smash and record-breaking 16-time Tony-nominated Hamilton: An American Musical, Tony-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda rapped his heart out by creating his own show inspired by his very own life EN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS?with his breakout Broadway debut musical hit,?In The Heights. It was also co-written by Quiara Alegr?a Hudes.
From the 2008 telecast, Tony-nominees this year (for our very own Hamilton) Lin-Manuel Miranda and Christopher Jackson, past Tony-nominee Robin De Jesus, Andrea Burns, Janet Decal, future Tony-winner?Karen Olivo, and members of the original cast perform a medley of the show’s opening title song and the show-stopping “96,000.”
IN THE HEIGHTS was first developed by Miranda in 1999 while being a Sophomore at college and continued to expand it for many years. Following a final workshop at Eugene O’Neill Theater Center‘s National Music Theatre Conference in 2005, the show had its official world premiere Off-Broadway at Baryshnikov Arts Center in 2007. It earned critical acclaim before the show officially moved to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2008 and earned more worldwide attention with this fresh new face starring in a new musical that he wrote all by himself. IN THE HEIGHTS ran on Broadway for a total of 1,213 performances. It received 13 Tony Award nominations in 2008, winning 4 including Best Musical. It also won a Grammy for Best Cast Album. IN THE HEIGHTS?still continues to be performed around the world by schools, community theaters, Regional Theatre, and many more. A new premiere production that opened in London’s West End recently was nominated for this year’s Olivier Awards and is running until October.
Will Lin-Manuel Miranda take home the Tony glory again this Sunday Night?!!
Isn’t this show so funky and gets you into the hip-hop groove?
